The trailhead is on the far eastern edge of Yosemite Valley and provides access to two parallel trails on either side of the Merced River - the John Muir Trail and the Stock Trail. Three extremely popular waterfalls are also accessible from here: Vernal Fall, Silver Apron, and Nevada Fall.

How to get there?

Though there's no parking allowed at the trailhead, there is Yosemite Valley Trailhead Parking half a mile from it, as well as the Yosemite Village and Curry Village parking lots (3 miles and a mile from the trailhead, respectively). You can also use the free-of-charge Yosemite Valley Shuttle Bus and get off at Stop #16.

Rules and Regulations

A Wilderness Permit is required for overnight camping in the Yosemite Wilderness. For more information, please see Yosemite National Park - Wilderness Permits. Day hikers and backpackers looking to summit Half Dome also need a separate permit from around late May to mid-October. Yosemite National Park charges entrance fees. As of 2023, they are $35 per car and $20 per person if entering on foot, by bike, or as a passenger on a non-commercial bus. Entrance tickets are valid for 7 consecutive days. America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Annual Passes are also accepted.
Yosemite National Park lies in bear country, and storing food and other attractants in a bear-resistant manner is required by law. Hikers can use allowed storage containers or bear lockers, if available. Hanging food is not permitted.
Dogs are not allowed in the backcountry.
Bicycles are not allowed on the Mist Trail.
