Rock Harbor to Windigo via The Greenstone Ridge Trail

41.5 mi∞ ft∞ ft

Rock Harbor to Windigo via The Greenstone Ridge Trail is an excellent opportunity to take in Isle Royale’s unique landscape.  You’ll hike from one end to the other along Greenstone Ridge - the “backbone” of the island.

From the top of the ridge, enjoy the grand views of the island and Lake Superior - the Mount Franklin area has some especially pretty panoramic views.  You’ll hike through multiple types of forest, explore beautiful interior lakes, and reach the two highest points on the island - Mount Desor (1394 feet) and Ishpeming Point (1377 feet).

Listen to loons and wolves howling at night and, if you feel comfortable identifying them, eat some fresh berries - blueberries and thimbleberry grow in abundance along the trail.

Numerous elevation changes and long distances can make this trail hard for inexperienced hikers.  Trekking poles can be a great helper here.
